Many cable TV providers offer integrated units that combine PVR functionality with a cable tuner (CCTV DVR).  Cable tuners are needed to watch digital broadcasts such as HDTV broadcasts, pay-per-view broadcasts and video-on-demand broadcasts.  A cable tuner is not needed for standard analog broadcasts.

One key advantage of using an integrated cable TV / DVR unit is that only one set-top box and remote control is needed.  This saves space and keeps life simple.

Some cable TV PVRs include two tuners which permit two programs to be simultaneously recorded.  Alternatively, a viewer can watch one digital station live while recording another show on a different station.

The disadvantage of purchasing an integrate cable TV tuner/PVR is that the PVR functionality will likely not work should should you decide to change from a cable TV service to a satellite TV service.  Integrated units might also not have all the features that you would like.
