To unscramble digital transmissions from satellites, a set-top decoder unit is needed.  Satellite TV providers now offer integrated units that combine the satellite decoder unit with PVR functionality.

The advantages of integrated units for consumers is that space is saved, a single remote control can be used, and usability is simplified. Some satellite decoder PVR units include two tuners that allow two programs to be recorded simultaneously.

Should you decide to change satellite TV providers in the future, however, your integrated unit might no longer work.  It is therefore a good idea to check with your service provider about this before purchasing a combined PVR satellite tuner.  One option is to rent the integrated unit rather than purchase it.
